MOMPÓS, COLOMBIA

Mompos has been awarded by the United Nations with the title of a ” World Heritage” and it is a river island embraced by the mighty Magdalena River.

A historic icon in the Cocuntry it was the craddle of independence for the whole America Continent.

It is here where Bolivar initiated his independence campaign: ” A Caracas le debo la vida y a Mompos le debo la gloria”. ” It´s to Caracas that I owe my birth but to Mompos I owe my glory”.

Traveling to Mompos is covering distance in time. The colonial architecture of the town is mixed with the wild nature of its still virgin sorroundings. Here you can still gaze monkeys in the leafy trees of its many quaint squared and parks and even lazy bears ( sloths ), a curious metaphor that illustrates the paused rythm of life in this sleepy city which is perfect to evoke its nostalgic romantic past”.

"Mompos does not exist, we have dreamed of it but it does not exist"

From the El General en su Laberinto. Gabriel Garcia Maquez.
